Agatha Christie’s grandson unveils Wallingford statue
Wallingford, the hometown of Agatha Christie for 42 years, has unveiled the UK’s first life size statue of the best-selling author. The bronze was unveiled on Saturday September 9 by Christie’s grandson Mathew Prichard, in the Kinecroft Park.
The life-size bronze of Agatha Christie seated at a bench, glancing up from the pages of her book as if finding inspiration for her next novel, is by renowned figurative sculptor Ben Twiston-Davies. It has been called ‘A Monument to Imagination’ and is set to inspire generations of creative thinkers. Visitors can take pictures of themselves seated on the bench next to the author, overlooking the park and against the backdrop of Wallingford Museum.
Just across the road, Wallingford Museum is the home of a permanent exhibition: ‘At Home with the Queen of Crime’ which goes behind the scenes of Agatha’s home life, featuring photographs of her at Winterbrook House and memories of local people who met her. Read her handwritten letters revealing her love of pantomimes and her gradual frustration as her health declined.
