Air ambulance lands on M4 between Theale and Reading after bridge collision involving lorry

Fire crews from Tilehurst, Reading and Whitley Wood were called at 10.30am after the artic lorry, loaded with scrap metal, was involved with a collision with a pillar supporting the Burghfield Road bridge, eastbound on the M4, between junctions 12 (Theale) and 11 (Reading).
The lorry driver was rescued from the lorry by security guards, who stopped to help whilst driving past on the motorway, according to firefighters.
When firefighters arrived, the driver was sat beside the lorry, with cuts to his face and hands, but conscious.
Firefighters administered oxygen to the driver, before paramedics then arrived to take over.
An air ambulance landed on the motorway, with a doctor on board, but took off without the lorry driver. He was instead transported to hospital by road, according to firefighters at the scene.
Two lanes eastbound were closed during the incident and the third lane was also closed whilst the air ambulance landed.
No other vehicles were involved.
Firefighters left the scene at around 12.30pm.
The recovery of the lorry was overseen by Thames Valley Police and the Highways Agency, with an examination of the bridge and pillar undertaken by structural engineers.
Update
South Central Ambulance Service confirm the Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance was called at 10.26am to the incident.
The lorry driver was instead taken by road, with non life-threatening injuries, to the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading, after two ambulance crews and rapid response vehicle were sent to the scene.
