Aldbourne resident pays tribute to Sir David Frost
Mr Price worked closely with Sir David on programmes such as Frost on Sunday and also produced the popular broadcaster’s interviews with Nelson Mandela.
He also helped to distribute the now infamous interviews between Sir David and former US President Richard Nixon to different parts of the world - interviews which have since been made into a best-selling book and an award-winning film.
“I knew David for 45 years. I have personally lost a great friend and we as a nation have lost the greatest-ever broadcaster,” said Mr Price.
“I have fond memories of him. I think the reason he was so well respected is because he was never abrasive. He always came at an interview like he wanted to talk to someone one to one and that was very important.
“He also had this huge memory, the best of anyone I knew. Also on top of that he was a great humourist, he will be sadly missed.”
Mr Price fondly recalled the time he was approached by the South African Broadcasting Channel to find someone to carry out five major interviews with their former president Mandela – and insisted he had only one person in mind.
“They asked me to find someone good who wouldn’t be in any way biased. The first person I thought of was David and when I phoned him and asked if he wanted to do it his immediate reaction was, yes, yes, yes,” he said.
Mr Price, who was awarded an MBE in 2000 and held the position of Chair of the Watermill Theatre between 2003 and 2007, added:“When I was promoting Frost on Sunday I arranged for him to interview Olof Palme, the Swedish politician, who went on to become Prime Minister.
“I remember we were accused of appointing the next Swedish prime minister because we didn’t interview any of the other candidates!”
Mr Price, who held the position of BAFTA Chair between 1991 and 1993 and helped fund the Oscar winning film The King’s Speech, also revealed that he and Mr Frost were in talks to make a feature film together just three months ago adding that he was “still very emotional” about his friend’s death.
