All lanes now open on M4 eastbound at Membury following earlier incident
Police were called to the incident between junctions 14 and 15 at 4.45am in which several vehicles collided with a horse which was loose on the carriageway.
The horse was killed in the incident.
It has not yet been confirmed where the horse had escaped from. No horse boxes were involved in the incident.
The Highways Agency confirmed that all lanes of the carriageway had been reopened by 11am, but said that normal traffic conditions were not expected until 12.15pm.
One vehicle, a white van, overturned at the scene and the driver needed to be released from the vehicle by Wiltshire Fire Service using hydraulic equipment.
He was taken to the Great Western Hospital, Swindon, for treatment but his injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
One other person was also admitted to hospital.
Two people with minor injuries were treated at the scene by the South Central Ambulance Service, which sent one ambulance to the incident.
The South Western Ambulance Service also sent a total of five vehicles to the scene.
