All life is here

One of the joys of The Watermill Theatre is the consistent high quality of its Senior Youth Theatre annual production. Twenty-eight young people, from 11 – 16 years, have been working hard on

, a new play by Beth Flintoff which can be seen at the theatre from Wednesday to Saturday
Outreach Director Beth Flintoff always asks the young people what they would like to perform

‘Many of them were keen to perform in a comedy and several are skilled in other types of performance, such as ballet and stage fighting, so I wanted to showcase their talents. This play is a way of combining several different genres of writing all at once. In Writers’ Block, two writers sit busily writing, and everything they write happens on stage – so we have a romantic regency novel, a Hollywood blockbuster, and a CIA spy film all happening at once. And pieces of my own life crept in, of course. One of the characters, Amy, is inspired by my best friend, and a couple of the scenes are lifted straight from things that happened to her. The real Amy lives in Geneva now but is hoping to fly back for the performance!’
‘I can remember so clearly the performances I was involved in when I was a teenager, and it’s a privilege to play a part in creating opportunities for young people now – a fully fledged production with fifteen members of staff from The Watermill involved in making it happen. We can see their confidence and excitement mounting as we get closer to the production week - alongside the nerves, of course! The Watermill is lucky to have such an enthusiastic collection of young people (not to mention their dedicated parents!) who are so committed to the theatre, and we are keen to encourage and nurture them.’
