And the pothole thickens...
Eddie Langford, aged 37, was driving a Peugeot 206 through the village on his way to Combe Gibbet on April 27 when he drove into the pothole at Burtons Hill, near Newbury Street.
He said: “I quickly pulled over and could see the front offside wheel of my car had been damaged. I went back to check the state of the road and I was horrified at what I had just driven into.”
On assessing the damage he subsequently made a claim for around £200 in damages owing to the poor quality of the road.
Mr Langford received a reply recently advising him that his claim had been unsuccessful as the council’s insurers Zurich said the pothole was of a reasonable size and the road had been checked two weeks before and was judged as reasonable.
“I have been treated terribly” he said. “I’m totally angry, I work very hard for my money. My blood is boiling.”
West Berkshire Council spokesperson Keith Ulyatt said: “We assess claims in line with section 58 of the Highways Act and pass our assessment to our insurers (Zurich) who then apply their own scrutiny to it. Our insurers agreed in this case that we were not liable.”
Mr Langford said he would seek legal advice and may appeal.
