Animal shelter warns of abandoned pets

The West Berkshire shelter says there is a higher risk of unwanted pets being dumped post-Christmas

AN animal shelter has warned that abandoned pets are on the increase following the festive season.

Care leader at the National Animal Welfare Trust's (NAWT) Trindledown Farm centre, Jen Healey, said: “It's sad but it's true. Not only are unwanted Christmas presents given away but some older pets are abandoned to make way for new ones.”

Although not all the animals have been abandoned, the NAWT specialises in re-homing older dogs.

One of them on the waiting list Nellie.

The nine-year-old spaniel bitch came to the centre with a wound in her side.

She was so poorly she had to be kept isolated for months but is now nearly fit and looking for a loving home.

She still needs medication and a special diet so her new owners must be prepared to stay in close touch with the centre to co-ordinate her treatment.

If you can help Nellie's hard luck story have a happy ending, contact the centre, on (01488) 638584 or email a.mercer@nawt.org.uk
