Newbury’s Market Street to close for one week next month for resurfacing work

A Newbury street – which caused gridlock in the town centre when it was last shut – will be closed for a week next month.

Market Street will be shut from Monday, August 7 until Sunday, August 13, between the access road to West Berkshire Council’s offices and its junction with Mayors Lane.

The closure is in place to allow road surfacing to take place.

Gatemen will be on site to facilitate delivery access to Kennet Centre and residential access will be maintained throughout.

A diversion will be signed on site, with Blue light access via that route only.

The clockwise diversion is via Cheap Street, Bear Lane, southbound on the A339, St John’s Road, Newtown Road and Bartholomew Street.

The anti-clockwise diversion takes motorists via Bartholomew Street, Newtown Road, St John’s Road, northbound on the A339 and Cheap Street.

In April a gas leak forced an emergency closure of the road, which caused heavy traffic throughout central Newbury, gridlocking the town centre and roads such as the A339 and the A343.
