Appeal for fitness instructor volunteer

Healthy lifestyle encouraged to reduce dementia risk

A NEWBURY law firm has appealed for a fitness instructor to join a voluntary group aiming to encourage healthy lifestyles to reduce the risk of developing dementia.

Solicitors Irwin Mitchell, based in London Road, has appealed for a local gym or fitness instructor to join the Newbury Dementia Friendly Community Forum (NDFCF).

Launched in the summer, the voluntary forum aims to develop new activities and social opportunities for people living with dementia and their carers.

This was after Public Health England revealed growing evidence that the risk of developing dementia could be reduced by a healthy lifestyle, including taking regular exercise and not smoking.

Irwin Mitchell spokesman Stewart Stretton-Hill said dementia had become the top cause of death in England and Wales.

“Being physically active will help reduce the risk of dementia, along with eating healthily and maintaining a healthy weight,” said Mr Stretton-Hill.

“With this in mind, we are inviting representation from a local gym or fitness instructor to join the forum and help us to raise awareness about how to incorporate exercise and healthy eating into their lifestyle.”

The NDFCF meets once a month.
