Appeal lodged for new housing application in Upper Basildon

An appeal has been made to the secretary of state against the decision of West Berkshire Council to refuse planning permission for a new property proposal at Knappswood Farm, Upper Basildon.

John Wakefield applied to construct a new four-bed house and access road, replacing the site's current use as a stables and hardstanding.

The council refused the application on the grounds of impeded road access, the visual impact on the surrounding area and the loss of privacy for neighbouring residents.

Basildon Parish Council previously objected, saying: "The proposal is outside of the settlement boundary, is out of keeping with its immediate surroundings and represents over development of the area."

The council voiced further concern with the access road to the proposed property and precedent this could set for further development outside of the settlement boundary.

Residents shared similar concerns.

Kirsty Aldred said: "The village already lacks pavements leading to the local school, a walk I do every day. Increasing the roads and cars in this area could be dangerous."

John Mealor said: "Open spaces need protecting if biodiversity is to survive. Building outside the village settlement area will only add to its demise bringing more traffic, noise, air and light pollution."

All representations must be received by April 5.
