Appeal to return war medals to former Newbury bypass protester
Janet Griffin, of Denmark Road, remembered how Fred Dobson gave up his four medals during the anti-Newbury bypass demonstrations in the town in February 1996, in protest against the Government.
So when she learnt the whereabouts of the medals, with a family of veteran campaigners in London, she decided that she would try to have them returned to him or his family.
Mrs Griffin knows little about Mr Dobson other than that he came from the local area, and she has asked that the medals not be identified, to prevent false claimants coming forward.
She said: “We were all taking part in the walk and I remember this old chap who had his medals with him. He handed them to another protester in front of the nation’s press and said he was so disgusted with what was happening that he did not want anything to do with his medals anymore.
“But of course, that is such a long time ago and either he or his family may now want these back.”
She has asked that anyone with information contact her on (01635) 47437.
