Armed police called to axe incident at Two Saints hostel last week
The incident happened at around 9pm and a spokeswoman for Thames Valley Police, Lucy Billen, said: "As is standard procedure when there is a report of a weapon at an incident, armed police were deployed to the scene.
“The man was quickly arrested and subsequently cautioned for causing criminal damage.
“There had been no threat of danger to the public.”
The man was later given a police caution and released without charge.
However, his actions prompted his eviction from the hostel said Two Saints chief executive Louise Barnden.
She said it was not known how the man came to have an axe but added: "Our residents live in our hostels, they come and go as they please, they are not searched by Two Saints staff.
“I think this would be just the same as a person if they were in their own home and they had an axe.
“We certainly don’t search our residents. If we did, people would think that was actually quite an intrusive and unwarranted thing for us to do.
“If somebody has been found to have a weapon as in this case, of course we would take action.”
Two Saints runs a number of hostels in Newbury and West Berkshire, including in Newtown Road and London Road and also offers a number of services such as debt support, medical advice and access to learning services.
