Army chef dishes up community lunch at Newbury's Royal British Legion

The event was held at the branch’s Pelican Lane base and the 90 diners included branch president Michael Westropp and the mayor of Newbury, Anthony Pick.
Blessed by branch vicar, the Rev Keri Eynon, the meal was cooked by army chef, Staff Sgt Karl Ansell of the Denison Barracks, Hermitage, assisted by Legion branch chef Hayden Warren.
It was funded by Waitrose, whose staff volunteered as waiters.
Branch secretary Keith Williams said: “It was absolutely marvellous – everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves.”
The RBL welcomed elderly people from Newbury and the surrounding local area including Beedon, Tadley, Hungerford and Lambourn.
Loose Ends Day Centre for the Homeless, Cheap Street, Newbury invited the homeless and young members of Thatcham charity, Cornerstone, which provides support for young people leaving foster care, were also at the luncheon.
Waitrose has supported just under 500 similar luncheons countrywide, served to almost 40,000 people.
