Artisan market set to become monthly fixture
Newbury 2016 dates different to farmers' market
A NEW artisan market proved a success in Newbury town centre on Sunday Nov 1, and plans are in the pipeline for it to become a regular monthly fixture next year.
Some 40 specialist stalls filled Northbrook Street, where tempting food smells permeated the air, including paella, pizza and curries, alongside a diverse range of specialist stalls, offering items from German sausage to pies, Egyptian artifacts and local Tutts Clump Cider.
There was even chance to have a favourite photograph recreated in 3D.
Suzanne Young, from organiser Newbury BID, said: “There was a really good buzz, a great atmosphere.”
Although the market took place on the same day as the monthly Farmers Market, this situation was set to change next year, she added.
The artisan market will start at Easter and continue monthly until November – except in May, when the date will alter because of the annual Bayer run.
“We have chosen different dates to the farmer’s market next year,” said Ms Young.
The artisan market is set to spread across Market Place, Mansion House Street, Northbrook Street and Bartholomew Street and the intention is to keep it local.
“Our remit is [traders within] a 20-mile radius of Newbury,” said Ms Young.
“We are looking to grow it and get a diverse range of stalls, including vintage clothing.”
Plans for next year also include a stage with live entertainment to attract a crowd during the spring and summer months.
Original art, designer crafts and sizzling street food formed part of Sunday’s lively market, with music filling the air, alongside children’s activities.
Gift ideas and foodie treats, from ciders and sauces, to meat and sweet treats, were all on offer.
There was entertainment in children’s corner, with activities like Hallowe’en mask-making, face-painting and biscuit decorating.
