Artist prepares to open 'youth cafe' in Newbury

Sue Hines is hoping to showcase the work of talented young people at a new cafe in Kings Road West

IT'S all hands on deck as a young artist prepares to open a ‘youth cafe' in Newbury to showcase the work of talented young people.

Twenty-six-year-old Sue Hines, of Speen, hopes the venture might inspire others to turn their lives around in the way she did.

In April 2009 she was homeless and down on her luck but initially found inspiration at an arts workshop at Newbury's Two Saints Hostel where she was staying.

After 18 months of planning she is now set to launch the cafe project in Kings Road West.

She said: “I have had wonderful support from The Prince's Trust, Newbury Corn Exchange, New Greenham Arts and from (Newbury estate agents) Carter Jonas, who have allowed me to use the premises, rent free, for two weeks.

“I'm hoping to secure funding to keep it open for nine months.”

Ms Hines, who has achieved a nationally recognised Gold Arts Award, said: “When I came to Newbury I was shy and scared and New Greenham Arts and The Corn Exchange helped me focus and make something of my life. I want that for other young people, especially as youth clubs are under threat. I want to show the positive things young people are capable of.”

The cafe, which features a mural created by local youngsters of all ages, is currently being decorated and officially opens on Friday, March 25.
