At home staff help outdoors at Donnington school
Staff were honouring a commitment made earlier this year to donate one hour of ‘partner’ time for each gold medal won by Team GB at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Eight staff members spent 63 hours – the number of gold medals won by this summer’s sporting heroes – helping with a range of renovation projects in the children’s playground, which included refurbishing the sandpit and playhouse, clearing and replanting gardens with sensory plants such as mint; stripping, power-washing and refurbishing a double swing area for autistic children and repairing broken fencing.
The branch manager at John Lewis at Home Newbury, Dominic Joyce, said: “We were thrilled to be taking part in the scheme to develop The Castle School site.
“We pride ourselves on being a part of the community and are delighted to be able to support this important local cause following the success of our athletes at the Olympic and Paralympic Games this summer.”
The headteacher at The Castle School, Jon Hewitt, said: “We’re over the moon with the result of the hard work put in by the John Lewis volunteers.
“It’s just amazing the difference they have made in such a short time and their efforts have greatly enhanced our children’s playtime.
“We are all so very grateful to the team at John Lewis for their Community support”.
