Athletes celebrate school games success

Pupils from Falkland Primary School won the Quadkids athletics event at the county finals, which took place at Wellington College recently, with Park House students emerging victorious in the table- tennis finals.
The young athletes displayed their gold medals at Sainsbury’s Newbury last month, where colleagues congratulated them on their achievements.
Park House pupil Max McDougall, said: “It was a fantastic experience competing at the Berkshire Sainsbury’s School Games and I was so happy with my performance. I’m still buzzing from the whole experience.
“The Sainsbury’s School Games is one of the highlights of the sporting year at school and I worked very hard to be involved. The support that I’ve received from my friends, family and everyone at school along the way has been amazing.”
Other West Berkshire schools receiving medals included Kennet School winning gold in touch rugby, The Downs School scooping silver in rowing and gold medals in the handball, while bronze medals went to St Bartholomew’s School for super sixes golf, Theale Green for handball and rowing, and the Willink School also picked up bronze medals in rowing.
Other primary schools sharing success were St Nicholas with silver medals in orienteering, St Finians picking up silver in quadkids athletics. Hermitage won gold in the mini-tennis and Spurcroft School won bronze in the tri-golf.
West Berkshire school sport network manager and school games organiser, James Mandry, said: “West Berkshire Schools have worked hard all year and it’s fantastic to see the schools rewarded for all their hard efforts.
"We look forward to building on this success and continue to create sporting opportunities for our young students to ensure an equally successful event next year.”
The Sainsbury’s School Games is backed by National Lottery funding through Sport England and delivered by the Youth Sport Trust.
The Games are also supported by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the Department of Health and the British Paralympic Association.
Sainsbury’s Newbury store manager, Dene Burton, said: “I have great memories of competing in sport at school and the excitement around school sports day.
"The Sainsbury’s School Games captures this excitement and provides a platform for young sports stars to really raise the bar."
