Community heroes have been honoured for their contribution to life in West Berkshire.

The annual Community Champion Awards, organised by West Berkshire Council, are a way of saying thank you to the people who have done something special for their local community and to honour those individuals and community groups who have gone above and beyond to support residents throughout West Berkshire this year.

The 2022 Community Champions are – Junior Citizen of the Year: Swara Dasarwar; Volunteer of the Year: Sarah Johnson; Community Group of the Year: Purley Sustainability Group; and Lifetime Achievement Award: Mike Warner.

The judges were so impressed with the quality of nominations this year that they awarded a number of Highly Commended certificates too.

The winners were presented with their awards by West Berkshire Council chairman Rick Jones at a ceremony at Shaw House.

Their details will also be recorded in the Roll of Civic Awards.

Junior Citizen of the Year Swara helped set up a charity coffee morning in Newbury Town Hall last summer, where the proceeds helped to provide toys and equipment for pupils at The Castle School. The group managed to raise a staggering £1,650.
