Backers sought for Community United cricket fundraiser

A community group is calling for West Berkshire businesses to donate and back its One Community fundraiser, writes Kyra Radley.

Community United is organising a cricket and family fun day at Falkland Cricket Club on Sunday, September 25, with a competition involving 12 teams.

The charity has invited last year’s winner, Thames Valley Police, to compete, along with two teams representing the local Indian community, two teams from local Muslim communities, an African team, a team from local churches, teams representing Newbury Town and West Berkshire Councils, a Berkshire Youth side and Greenham Trust.

Following the matches there will be slideshows, food and live entertainment provided by two local ethnic dance groups.

Community United’s executive officer Alice Kunjappy-Clifton said: “It’s our second year of running this event.

“Last year it was a fantastic day, and this year it will be twice as good.”

Community United aims to bring together people from different ethnic backgrounds and eliminate discrimination, creating equity and equal opportunity.

Through sport, the fundraiser is planning to allow businesses to promote their commitment to diversity in their community.

Community United marketing and development director Carol Jackson-Doerge said: “This really is a day for all the family and for sponsors it’s a chance to get their name out there, and to say that they believe in the community coming together as one.”

The charity is predominantly funded by grants and donations, so the day is a crucial opportunity to fundraise, especially as all donations from the day, up to £3,265, will be matched by Greenham Trust.

Community United fundraising director Julian Swift-Hook said: “These days we hear so much about divisions in our society, so we’re really happy to be doing something that is about people coming together.

“And for businesses who want to sponsor us, we are offering a range of sponsorship packages, starting at £250 – what better way to show your support for your community?”
