Bagnor duck race nets £450 for Donnington school
The ducks, which cost £1 each to race, were released into the River Lambourn, close to The Watermill theatre and raced down to the finish line opposite The Blackbird pub.
Three races were held throughout the day. Stealing the crown for the first was Millie Tennant.
The winner of the children’s race was Edward Hearn, closely followed by Grace Conington, both aged seven.
The winner of the final race was Christopher Broadfoot.
The event was organised by the residents committee of Bagnor village and all funds raised on the day will be donated to The Castle School, Newbury, a specialist school for children with special educational needs.
Committee member Dan Lovell told the Newbury Weekly News at the event: “It’s one of the best turn-outs we have had.
“The Castle School is probably the most local charity to us and it’s such a good cause.
“It’s always good fun, it’s great to see the kids running up and down the banks.”
Music instructor at The Castle School, Ali Watkinson, who was present at the event, said: “It’s really touching – I haven’t been to something that shows so much community spirit and goodwill.
“People are giving up their time to these children and that’s what is so lovely.
“On behalf of The Castle School, any funds raised or any time that’s given to our cause is always fully appreciated and if people ever want to come in and see how the money is being spent we would make them very welcome.”
All prizes for the winners, runners-up and those who got lucky in the raffle were donated by local residents and businesses.
