Bakery uses its loaf to launch new menu

Now on sale at the family-run bakery owned by Mark and Sue Hetherton in The Broadway, and Bartholomew Street, Newbury, is a honey and oat spelt loaf – Amy’s Loaf – to raise funds for Swings & Smiles, which is fundraising to build, equip and run a recreational facility for families with special needs children.
The loaf is named after Amy Cook, the daughter of Swings & Smiles founder Sian Cook, who inspired the launch of the charity. It costs £2.50, 50p of which will be donated to Swings and Smiles.
At 11am on Monday, Amy cut a cake in front of a crowd of the bakery’s regular customers, a number of staff and pupils from the Castle School, Shaw, and guests including the mayor of Newbury, Anthony Pick and MP Richard Benyon.
Mrs Hetherton said: “This morning went really well.
“The coffee shop was absolutely packed, probably 80 or more people.
“We have had some wonderful feedback regarding the loaf.
“We decided it was time to shout about local businesses working together and supporting each other. Supporting Swings and Smiles is a natural progression of that.
“We have spent some time redesigning our coffee shop and one of the new features is a hand-drawn map of West Berkshire showing where our ingredients are coming from.”
The collaboration with Swings & Smiles joins a string of new beginnings for Hetherton’s, which has also recently been granted an alcohol license, is now offering afternoon tea and from December 1 will also be launching a Sunday brunch menu.
And the fundraising initiative doesn’t stop there, with the Amy’s cupcake competition also being launched on the day.
Children are now being invited to design Amy’s cupcake, with the winning entry to be launched in-store to raise further funds for the charity.
Entries should be taken to Hetherton’s bakery on Sunday, December 1.
