Barber becomes a lady for a day
But that’s exactly what greeted customers at Greenall’s Barbers – based in Thatcham Broadway – last Friday after its owner, 38-year-old William Greenall, decided to dress up as a woman to raise money for Cancer Research UK.
Mr Greenall, whose mother Lynda died of the disease six years ago, decided to take the unusual approach after seeing the impact of the recent ‘no make-up selfies’ fundraising campaign on Facebook, which has so far raised more than £2m.
In response, some men have been doing the opposite - posting pictures of themselves with make-up on to the social networking site - which gave Mr Greenall the initiative to become a lady for the day.
Mr Greenall left no stone unturned in his look – even waxing his legs and wearing a bra, wedge shoes and full make-up.
He has donated half of his day’s takings - £130 - to the charity, but expects the final figure to be in excess of £900 once customer’s contributions have been counted.
Speaking to the
this week, Mr Greenall, who has run the business for the past nine years, said: “The customers didn’t know I was doing it so they got quite a surprise when they turned up.
“They all had a laugh and got into the spirit of it – it was a good day and I was delighted to be able to do my bit.
“I don’t mind looking like an idiot if it raises money for such a good cause.
“Having said that I won’t be dressing up as a woman again any time soon, it was uncomfortable and felt absolutely horrendous.”
