The rubbish that would have previously gone in general waste will now be collected in green food caddies, including peelings, teabags and eggshells.

Unless told otherwise, people should put out their food waste bins alongside their rubbish and recycling containers to be collected weekly.

The cResidents in these areas should prepare their waste for collection beginning this week.

Silver caddies are for indoor use and the green ones should be put outside.

Councillor Alan Oliver, portfolio holder for development management and waste services at Hart District Council, which is also making the change today, said: “Residents have told us they want to recycle more and this new service is a positive step towards driving up the amount we as a borough recycle and cutting down the amount thrown away into our rubbish bins.

“Food waste collections provide a great opportunity to recycle unavoidable food waste like fruit and vegetable peelings, meat bones, teabags and eggshells.”

According to the council, all food items put into the caddies, such as pet food, coffee grounds and bones - will all be turned into green energy and fertiliser.

All households should have received caddy packs including a silver indoor caddy, a green outdoor caddy, an information leaflet and a roll of liners.

Those with communal bins will receive theirs this week ahead of this week's collection.
