A swarm of bees have arrived in Newbury.

The swarm gathered by the roadside and drain outside Downer & Co, opposite Vue Cinema, earlier this afternoon.

But this is not an uncommon phenomenon in Newbury, says Andy Swanborough, director of HawkEye Pest Control, which is working to safely remove the bees from the road — which are at risk from motorists.

He explained swarming is a common practice during the summer months and occurs when a queen bee lands somewhere and the rest of her hive follows.

The current swarm could take up to two hours to clear.

Honey bees do not usually sting unless provoked.

Newbury Beekeepers Association is currently running a free public Swarm Line service where its experienced and insured beekeepers come and collect swarms, which will be rehomed among its members.
