Best gin in the country: Compton distillery creates gold medal winning London Dry Gin

From Compton to the world: staff at a West Berkshire-based distillery are celebrating after winning eight awards in a prestigious contest.

Hawkridge Distillers, based in a converted 17th century barn, was presented with gold medals for two of its gins at this year’s World Spirits Competition.

Its Wingless Eagle received 95 points from judges, who noted its “lively juniper bouquet aroma”, while The Vineyard London Dry Gin was praised for a “soft, creamy palate of citrus and spice” and scooped the best London Dry Gin in England accolade – the second time in five years it had won.

Five of its other gins received silver medals, adding to its tally.

More than 100 judges from across the world came together for their deliberations, among them master blenders, distillers, buyers, educators, consultants, and spirits communicators.

They awarded 3,760 medals including 50 golds in the gin category, which topped the table for the number of entries.

The IWSC spirits judging committee member, Dawn Davies, oversaw the two days of tasting.

“The overall quality of this year’s entries is very high,” she said.

The results pleased Hawkridge’s team, who said the WSC is one of the most respected and influential competitions in the spirits industry and is renowned for its rigorous evaluation process. Wins, they added, are a testament to a brand’s craftsmanship and dedication to quality.
