Big tidy up goes local

Community groups, businesses and residents who loathe litter urged to help

LOCAL community groups, schools, businesses and West Berkshire residents are being asked to join forces and take part in Britain's Big Tidy Up to show how much they loathe litter.

For anyone interested in taking an active approach to helping the community, litter pickers, gloves and high visibility vests for children and adults can be borrowed from West Berkshire Council.

West Berkshire's executive councillor for the environment, Hilary Cole (Con Chieveley), said: "Community action can make a huge difference, not just to the appearance of our district, but the amount of pride residents have for their local neighbourhood."

Tracey Reilly, general manager for Veolia in West Berkshire, added: "Community clean ups are fun, teambuilding activities which help make an even bigger difference to your local environment."

West Berkshire Council and its waste and recycling contractors, Veolia Environmental Services, follow a street cleansing, litter picking and weed treatment programme operating seven days a week.

Last year, 407 tonnes of litter were collected from West Berkshire streets.
