Bird flu cases confirmed in Highclere by DEFRA
Cases of bird flu have been confirmed in Highclere.
The highly pathogenic avian influenza was confirmed in captive birds near the north Hampshire village by DEFRA (Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs).
Strict biosecurity rules have been enforced to prevent the spread of avian flu after DEFRA confirmed the cases.
A 3km captive bird (monitoring) controlled zone and Mandatory Housing Order have been in effect since 7pm on Monday.
A statement published by DEFRA read: "Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 was confirmed in other captive birds at a premises near Highclere, Basingstoke & Deane, Hampshire on 5 December 2022."
Owners of poultry or other captive birds at any premises inside the zone must record the name and address of any person visiting the premises, the date of their visit and whether the person had any contact with captive birds during their visit.
Bird owners must also register all poultry entering or leaving their premises. Those engaged in the transport or marketing of poultry or poultry eggs must note the quantity and description, the date of the movement off the premises, along with the name and address of their destination.
The guidelines further explain that owners must house or isolate their birds to prevent the disease spreading and take all reasonable steps to minimise their birds' contact with other captive or wild birds, in accordance with veterinary instructions. Cleansing and disinfecting vehicles which have carried diseased birds is also advised.
It is a legal requirement to report suspected cases of bird flu immediately by calling 03000 200 301.
