Block of flats evacuated after spate of arsons in Newbury

Firefighters from Newbury and Dee Road were called to Carnegie Road, off Cheap Street, around 3:30am after a fire burnt through the windows of a ground floor flat.
The fire is believed to have started in a wheelie bin close to the property and then spread to a nearby car.
Newbury Watch Manager Bob Mitchell said that the male occupant of the ground floor flat was woken by a smoke alarm and was lucky to have got out unharmed.
Crews had also extinguished two fires in Cheap Street after another car and bin had been set alight.
A spokeswoman for Thames Valley Police, Rhianne Pope, said that a 30-year-old-man from Thatcham has been arrested on suspicion of arson and is currently in police custody.
