Screen One at the Corn Exchange provides an intimate 40-seat cinema for film fans
With Oscar season looming, Newbury's intimate cinema space, Screen One at the Corn Exchange has this week launched a new season of films which are sure to be on the lips of awards panels across the globe.
Providing an alternative to the multiplex experience, Screen One is a relaxed, intimate 40-seat cinema in the centre of Newbury where you can come and enjoy a coffee or glass of wine with your film instead of popcorn and cola.
The new season launches tomorrow (Friday) with a week of screenings of The King's Speech. Starring Colin Firth in the lead role, it documents the incredible but little-known friendship between King George VI (Firth) and the speech therapist who cured him of a debilitating stammer.
The season continues with Barney's Version (Feb 4 to 10), a star-studded film adaptation of Mordecai Richler's prize-winning novel about the colourful exploits of liquor-loving, cigar-chewing Barney Panofsky.
February also welcomes another much lauded film, Black Swan (Feb 11 to 17), starring Natalie Portman in a dark psychological thrill ride inspired by the Tchaikovsky ballet Swan Lake.
Cher and Christina Aguilera star in Burlesque (Feb 18 to 24), indie road movie Monsters (Feb 18 to 20) hits the big screen in a purely naturalistic monster movie, squeezed full of tentacled abominations and one of the stand-out films from the 2010 Sundance, London and Cannes Film Festivals, the beautifully-observed love story Blue Valentine is sure to delight all who see it.
With the season also featuring Mark Wahlberg in The Fighter, Keira Knightly and Carey Mulligan in Never Let Me Go, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Biutiful and the Coen Brothers remake of True Grit, starring Jeff Bridges as Rooster Cogburn, this is a truly remarkable season of hand-picked art-house and blockbuster films.
With a devout audience of regular attendees, Screen One is a real asset to Newbury's cultural scene. Tickets start at £6.20 (concessions available).
