Police were called to Greenham Mill at the junction of Bone Lane just before 2pm.
The body was recovered from the canal at around 5.10pm by a specialist police search and rescue team.
The area surrounding the canal was blocked off all afternoon as police, fire crews and the water rescue unit battled to free the body.
Earlier in the afternoon, the police helicopter was spotted circling the area.
Police spokeswoman, Lucy Billen, said: “We are in the process of identifying the body and the circumstances of the death which, at this stage, does not appear to be suspicious.”
It is believed that the body had been in the water for some time.
