Newbury Rotary boules tournament brings community together
Laughter, chatter and a healthy competitive spirit filled Newbury’s Market Place at the weekend as Newbury Rotary Club got the ball rolling on its returning boules tournament.
The annual Boules in the Square event returned to the town after a two-year absence because of pandemic restrictions.
The sunshine held out for the ninth annual event, which raised more than £11,000 – subject to pledges that are still due to be received.
The tournament, held on Sunday, hosted 14 teams from local businesses and the voluntary community sector.
Reigning champions the Willow & Blooms team took home the trophy once again, achieving victory over the Newbury Town Councillors team in the final.
This was the second year running that they had picked up the title.
Newbury Rotarian Graeme Leech said: “The community spirit was great, the sun really did shine on us. It was a good day.
“It was nice to see the local community there, getting together again. We have already had positive feedback which makes the time and effort put in worth it.”
Mr Leech said passers-by expressed interest in taking part in future events. He added: “We would not have been able to do it without support.”
He thanked sponsors, including Castle Electrical Services, Apple Print & Creative, Wilkins Chimney Sweep, Arlows Water, Rivar Sand and Gravel and Volunteer Centre West Berkshire.
