Bradfield Village Hall plans withdrawn
"Concerns" over £1.7million project to be addressed with West Berkshire Council
CONTROVERSIAL plans to build a new village hall in Bradfield have been temporarily withdrawn.
The applications to build a new complex, along with six semi-detached houses in the village, had faced heavy criticism from some residents, after they were submitted in May.
Objectors have said the development, which will cost around £1.7m, would be too big, too expensive and would mean the loss of valuable amenity space in the village.
Last week, the Bradfield Village Hall trustees said they have reluctantly withdrawn their plans, which would also see a new children’s playground built, while further discussions with West Berkshire Council take place.
In a statement, the trustees said: “The move would allow further discussions with West Berkshire Council on some specific issues of concern, which have been raised very late in the day and which were not brought up in the pre-application submission.
“It is our intention to conclude these discussions as soon as possible, so as to resubmit the applications, with any acceptable amendments, should these be required by the planning officer.”
Last month, the two sides had asked Newbury MP Richard Benyon to mediate in the row. However the meeting was subsequently cancelled.
The trustees added: “We are extremely grateful for his interest in this issue and hope to meet him in the not too distant future.”
