Brewery wants to build pub on Newbury College grounds

MARSTON’S Brewery wants to build a pub within the grounds of Newbury College and on the fringes of the new Sandleford development.
Although it has not yet put in an official planning application, the brewery has applied for a premises licence and outlined plans for the pub, which would sell food, with capacity for 180 covers and have a terraced patio and garden area.
The pub would also have residential accommodation and, in its premises licence application, Marston’s says it wants to be able to “sell to residents and supply their bona fide guests 24 hours per day”.
The principal of Newbury College, Dr Anne Murdoch, said: “We can confirm that we are in discussions with Marston’s on their proposals for a development on the site, but that is it at the moment.”
If approved, the licensing hours would be Monday to Thursday from 10am to midnight, Friday and Saturday from 10am to 1am and Sunday 11am to midnight.
The pub would be the latest in a string of developments planned for south Newbury.
Last year, plans were announced to build four indoor and four outdoor tennis courts, two squash courts, indoor and outdoor swimming pools and a gym and studio space on land nearby, between Newbury Rugby Club and Park House School playing field.
In March, Newbury College announced it was submitting an application for a 300-place Studio School, open to 14- to 19-year-olds within the college campus, which it anticipates will open in September 2015.
West Berkshire Council gave the go-ahead for the 2,000 home Sandleford development next to the college site in 2012.
