Spectacle of Light at Welford Park offers a quiet sensory experience this autumn

A spectacle of light and tranquillity will be returning to a West Berkshire estate this autumn, with a renewed focus on providing a quiet, sensory experience.

Welford Park’s Spectacle of Light is now in its second year and offers visitors the opportunity to see the home of The Great British Bake Off at night.

The event sees a carpet of colour illuminate the trails through the park’s woodland and around the gardens, with installations accompanied by atmospheric music.

And organisers promise “a completely different route” to last year, with a number of guided trails running through the park.

“We have had such good feedback for being a real quiet, sensory experience,” said Will Puxley, heir to the Welford estate and whose brainchild the event was.

“It is a quiet alternative for people. Welford is all about nature and quiet and calm.

“That really came through in a way we didn’t expect and that’s been a real positive.

“We’ve built a completely new path, which is 300m long, straight down an avenue of trees, which we think will look spectacular this year.

“the event is also the quiet alternative to a dog’s worst night of the year.”

One famous face who enjoyed the show last year was TV presenter Clare Balding.

She posted on social media after her visit and said: “What a brilliant idea – no big bangs, just lovely light and gentle music.

“Here’s a dog friendly light show in the beautiful setting of Berkshire. I’d love to see this idea spread around the country.”

Although the whole route is accessible, some parts can be difficult for wheelchairs and buggies, but a full loop of hard standing path has also been included in this year’s trail.
