Bristol bands night
Jane Mack has been recruiting Glastonbury musicians for Ace Space
Once again, the Glastonbury Festival has yielded a rich source of musically talented bands who have been snatched up by ACE Space, at St Nicholas Road, Newbury, for a gig on Saturday.
Three Bands. All from Bristol. All offering wildly different music. And, yet, they gel so well that they'll happily jump up on stage to perform with each other.
Headlining will the John E Vistic Experience, who are well-known on the Bristol music scene. Described by Tom Robinson as a ‘cult legend' on his BBC Radio 6 Music show recently, Vistic boasts the sort of whisky-drenched vocal and hypnotic stage presence that makes him a dead ringer for Nick Cave with a big dollop of Billy Idol thrown in. The band's music is almost too cool to dance to, but it's impossible not to do so.
Howlin' Lord return after their triumphant visit to ACE Space in February. Their Americana-style sound had most of the audience rocking on the dance floor and reviews of their debut album Gold Fury have been justifiably ecstatic.
Versatile singer/songwriter/keyboardist Daisy Chapman has been decribed as “Beth Orton with balls”. Her faultless vocals have a haunting beauty and romantic intensity which is strikingly raw. That's until she leaps on stage to perform with John E Vistic when she turns into a surprising little rock star.
Organiser Jane Mack said: “When I saw these bands at Glastonbury in the summer, I knew immediately that we had to get them all to Newbury. I like the fact that they're all so different musically and yet work so well together.”
