West Berkshire Macmillan Cancer Support chairwoman Erica Tipton said: "We held a very successful coffee morning in the Victory Room hall at the heart of Bucklebury and afterwards a tour of the garden at Bucklebury House by kind permission of Willie Hartley-Russell."

The historic estate has passed through the same family since 1540. The present owner, Willie Hartley-Russell, is a former high sheriff of Berkshire.

Mrs Tipton added: "We have raised so far over £2,000 with several donations still to come.

"Our thanks to everyone who supported the event and made it so successful."
