Bucklebury pub is given community award for second year
The annual award was launched by the West Berkshire Campaign For Real Ale six years ago to celebrate the contribution that local pubs make to their community. So far, each year has brought more nominations.
West Berkshire CAMRA spokesman Andy Pinkard said: “The 2012 award to the Cottage Inn reflects the work that landlords Gary and Mandy Bush have done to bring their pub into the heart of the community.
“Previously it struggled for many years under a variety of landlords, none able to deliver that elusive mix of values needed to appeal to the wider community.”
He added: “This is the first time a pub has won the award twice, and for it to be awarded to the Cottage Inn in successive years is an outstanding achievement by all concerned.”
Licensee Mr Bush said: “While many may remember our beacon events such as the diamond jubilee and our now annual fireworks evening, both raising money for designated charities, I feel it’s the ability to tailor our services to the needs of local groups and clubs, thereby creating that all-important hub, that matters.
“We adapt our opening hours to suit club activities; and sponsor, among others, the Bucklebury Wolves Football Club. However, a comment from a customer did sum up what we have achieved. They said: ‘I now know so many more of my neighbours than I did before Gary and Mandy took over in 2011’.”
West Berkshire CAMRA pubs officer Glenn Parsons said: “Putting the pub consistently at the heart of a community requires creativity and a lot of detailed work.
“The Cottage Inn is going from strength to strength, and we are pleased to recognise that continued development with this award for the second time.”
