Bucklebury pupils learn importance of water safety

Parents organise event following tragic circumstances

PUPILS from three local schools spent a day learning about water safety, inspired by tragic circumstances.

Beach lifeguards from Devon brought surfboards and flotation aids to Bucklebury Primary School, funded by parents who raised £750 through mums and dads discos.

Parent Jon Harry and his friend Brendon Prince, who is the chairman of Torbay Surf Life Saving Club, were caught up in a tragedy at Mawgan Porth, near Newquay in 2014. The two were first on the scene after a group of surfers were pulled out to sea by a riptide. They tried to save a father of two but he drowned, along with two others.

Wanting to make their children safe around water, friend and parent Richard Evans prompted the school to bring the lifeguards to the school as part of a community learning event.

Woolhampton and Yattendon primary schools joined the Bucklebury pupils in water rescue exercises and resuscitation techniques.

Mr Evans said that the event had received a lot of positive comments and top-up safety sessions were planned.

Parents also got in on the action through an awareness and resuscitation session, covering CPR and choking.

Bucklebury Primary School headteacher Andy Higgs said: “All the children thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s such a vital activity, bearing in mind so many of us go to the water on holidays or the weekends.

“We’re looking to ensure this is not a one off and continue to prepare children to enjoy their holidays in a safe way.”
