Bumper numbers at this year's show

Show's focus on education and agriculture has not been lost, says chief executive

THIS year's Royal County of Berkshire Show has been hailed as a great success.

Helped by good weather, the show is expected to have pulled in more than 60,000 people over the weekend.

Chief executive of the Newbury and District Agricultural Society, Daren Bowyer, said: "For me it's just the buzz of the whole place. It's just been so exciting to be part of it."

He said that the reception from traders had been positive, with plenty of business owing to the high footfall, but the shows true ethos had shone through.

"It's a show for everyone. We should never lose sight that it is about agriculture more than anything else," he said.

He added that children being taken round the agricultural stands and seeing the livestock was an important part of the day.

Mr Bowyer said the show's main aim was to develop an interest in the countryside and agriculture in young people, which he hoped would be life long.

"What's really important is for children to understand where food comes from. There's something that comes before the supermarkets," he said.

He said that the society was already thinking ahead to next year's show, with a focus on food.

And, following the success of this year, the society will begin work on a £1m building which it says will bring the show into a new era.

The building, which has been 20 years in the planning, will be used for displaying livestock and other exhibits.

Mr Bowyer said that the building would "secure the future of the show as a major exhibition of livestock" and "continue the mission of education."
