Bungee jump and Englefield 10k going on today (Sunday)
Twenty three people will take fundraising in Newbury to new heights as they hurl themselves off a crane in the town centre, with money raised going to West Berkshire Mencap.
And Newbury Weekly News reporter John Herring will become a flying fish as he plunges 200ft with only an elastic rope for support.
“I’m looking forward to the jump and I’m happy to support West Berkshire Mencap provided the bungee cord supports me,” Mr Herring said.
“My sister is autistic so I know the importance of the services that charities such as this one provide. This is my first and possibly last bungee jump so I hope that I can raise enough money to make it worthwhile.”
Members of West Berkshire Mencap will also be in the square with collection buckets and are asking for volunteers to contact Carrie-Anne Ferrie on 01635 41464.
The jump will take place in the Market Place between 10am and 1pm.
There's also the Englefield 10K run starting at 11.30am.
The event will be returning to the Englefield Estate near Theale for the fourth year.
There will be a 3.2k race for under 15s and a fancy dress run for children alongside the multi-terrain 10k event.
All proceeds from the event, organised by the Rotary Club of Reading Abbey & Tadley Runners, will go to the Sue Ryder Nettlebed Hospice, which provides care for people with life changing illnesses.
Last year’s event saw 319 runners raise £3,000 for the Thames Valley and Chiltern Air Ambulance and organisers are hoping to exceed last year’s numbers.
Entries will be accepted up until 10am on the day.
The Lambourn Carnival is also being held this weekend.
The event will feature the carnival exhibition with this year's theme focussing on Lambourn Schools and St Michaels and All Angels Church.
This evening also marks the closing night of the first Stockfest.
Hymns , popular poems and music will be performed at St John's Church, Stockcross from 6.30pm.
