Burghclere primary school pupils raise hundreds for east African school

Together with other local schools, Burghclere primary has developed links with a Ugandan school, Kowoko, in Mityana.
Following a trip by a teacher to Kowoko and a reciprocal visit by the headteacher of the Ugandan school to Burghclere, the link had gone from strength to strength, said headteacher Katrina Haines, with both schools sharing letters, prayers and information.
Pupils in the school’s green group then decided they wanted to raise funds for a solar panel for Kowoko after seeing photographs of a classroom with no electricity.
Fundraisers included a cake sale and sponsored water walk, which saw pupils make laps of the hall carrying a range of water containers, including five-gallon drums, replicating what many African children have to do in order to have fresh water every day.
A total of £872 was raised, enabling the school to install a solar panel.
Mrs Katrina Haines said: “We are very proud of our children and the concern they have for other children, nationally and internationally. This partnership has really helped build their understanding of global issues.”
