Burghfield Common school closed following flood

Staff battled frantically on Friday to prevent damage as water gushed from ceiling

MRS BLAND's Infant and Nursery School in Jordan's Lane, Burghfield Common, is closed today following a flood on Friday.

The school had to send children home when a pipe burst in the ceiling on Friday, with water gushing down the wall for more than an hour.

Headteacher Alison Lewis said she hoped the school would be open again soon, but that they would not know when this would be until engineers complete their inspection today (Monday).

She said: “Of course we would like to open again as soon as possible, but at the moment we just don't know when.

“When we came in today (Monday), the heating was not working either. We don't know if the two problems are related, but the engineers are currently looking into it.”

Mrs Lewis opted to look on the bright side, she said: “There wasn't much damage to the school. Fortunately it happened while we were in and our ladies were absolutely fantastic in limiting the problems. Had it happened while we were closed, it could have been much worse.”

“We are not sure what caused the problem,” she said. “It was quite a major flood on Friday, just as the children were going to lunch, and for health and safety reasons, we decided to send them home.”
