Burghfield man faces pre-sentence report

Ross Quainton appeared at court in handcuffs last week after failing to turn up to sentencing earlier this month

A MAN who failed to turn up for sentencing appeared in handcuffs in the dock before Newbury magistrates last Thursday, March 24.

Twenty-seven-year-old Ross Quainton of Burghfield was arrested when he did not show up on March 1, the court was told.

He had admitted, at an earlier court appearance, taking a vehicle without consent, three counts of making off without paying for goods or services and breaching a conditional discharge.

Mr Quainton admitted failing to surrender to bail as soon as practicable but Ian Campbell, defending, said: “On the day in question he was in the police station next door. When an officer brought him round a warrant had already been issued and he was told to come back on March 1. He forgot and did not read a follow-up text message.”

As a result, probation services had been unable to prepare a pre-sentence report, magistrates were told.

Magistrates bailed Mr Quainton until April 14 on condition he co-operates with the probation service in preparing the report.
