Burghfield May Fayre celebrates 25th anniversary

Soaring temperatures sees crowds descend on The Hatch

SOARING temperatures and a packed weekend of events and entertainment made the 25th anniversary of the Burghfield May Fayre one to remember.

Organisers had planned an extra special celebration to mark the event’s quarter-century with talent shows, live music, games and a whole host of food and drink, meaning the crowds that went along to The Hatch were not left wanting.

Events kicked off with a showcase of Burghfield’s budding rock and pop stars with Burghfield’s Got Talent on the Friday, with favourites such as The Willink School Band, the Air Cadets and local group the Deaf Dawgs.

Saturday saw the Fab Beatles take to the stage, while Elvis fans were treated to a medley of the King’s greatest hits from Mike Nova, along with a packed bar and plenty of refreshments.

Sunday hosted the main event, with throngs of young and old alike enjoying the fine weather at the May Fayre, which featured all manner of stalls offering games, refreshments, and fresh, local produce as the crowds enjoyed basking in the warm weather.

Chairman of the Burghfield Residents’ Association, Alec Mudge, said: “It was a fantastic weekend.

“The weather was perfect, which obviously helped, but everyone had a great time. I’ve had people tell me it was the best May Fayre yet.

“There were queues from around 10am on the Sunday, all through the day, which gives you some idea how busy it was.

“Everyone involved in organising it has worked so hard and it really showed.”

Last year the event raised more than £9,000 for local causes and, although the funds are still being counted, Mr Mudge expects this year’s fundraising to easily surpass that total.

Mr Mudge added: “The May Fayre enjoyed by so many does need a lot of volunteers to make it happen.

“We’ve had a number of previous members move away from the village or retire and so we would love to hear from anyone who lives in the local community who is interested in helping out in the future.”
