Burst Thames Water pipe leaves Lambourn, Great Shefford and surrounding residents with no water

Many West Berkshire households have had no running water since yesterday morning.

A burst pipe in Baydon Road left residents of Lambourn, Great Shefford and other surrounding areas with limited or no water supply since the early hours of yesterday morning (Saturday).

Thames Water says its teams responded to the issue quickly — reducing the number of properties impacted to around 60. But many households are still without water.

The company says repairing the pipe has been made more difficult due to other services in the area and local events such as Lambourn Carnival.

Crowle Road, Lambourn was shut to aid the repairs and the company says it worked with West Berkshire Council to avoid the carnival parade route — which it says did impact its initial re-supply plan.

But it revealed its teams have been working on the repair overnight, which should see regular water supply restored by late afternoon today (Monday).

Great Shefford resident, Paul Allen, says he had no water for nine hours and was frustrated by the lack of information he received.

He said: “Being disabled and aware of infection control, I couldn’t have showers or wash my hands.

“I used water from the garden to flush the loo. My friends had bottled water. We were told the pub had to shut.”

But he says the community spirit was very noticeable.

Thames Water says it has contacted and delivered bottled water to all of its priority service customers, including local stables, and is seeking potential alternative supply options for these customers.

A spokesperson commented: “We’re sorry to customers in the RG17 area who are currently experiencing no water or lower pressure.

“Our teams were on site quickly and had the pipe shut in by 9am yesterday (Saturday 27), which reduced the risk of any potential property flooding and re-supplied water to the majority of customers.

“Due to the complexity of the repair and local events in Lambourn, we were unable to re-supply all customers overnight.

“But we have delivered bottled water to those still impacted and are working closely with them to consider alternative supply options.

“Our teams have been working tirelessly and the repair should be completed by late afternoon today.”
