Burghfield cake artist collaborates with Pladis Global and McVities to create Coronation cake for King Charles III
A Burghfield-based cake artists has said it was an “absolute honour” to help design and decorate the King’s Coronation cake, writes Summer Hyde.
Award-winning cake artist Elizabeth Wood, who runs CakeBuds in Burghfield, was invited by Pladis Global and McVities to collaborate on the design, meticulous detail and decoration of the Royal Coronation Cake - alongside cake artist Rosalind Miller.
The five-month journey from concept through to embellishment left this cake standing at approximately 1.2 metres tall.
It was then presented as a gift at Windsor Castle, in commemoration of the King and Queen’s Coronation.
Ms Wood said “I feel incredibly honoured to have been asked to take part in this amazing team and play a small part in this historical event. It has been one of the hardest secrets I have ever had to keep."
The cake signals the Carolean age and inspiration came from the Prince’s Foundation ethos – respecting the past, building the future.
The cake’s design combined modern aspects, but also celebrated the majesty of the coronation, with each tier inspired by historic coronation regalia.
The bottom tier reflected the Stone of Destiny – which travelled from Edinburgh Castle to Westminster Abbey to be placed beneath the Coronation chair itself.
The second tier was engraved with the pattern copied from the Anointing spoon and the third tier was embossed with gilded detailing from the Coronation chair, known as King Edward’s Chair.
The final tier featured a porcelain border with details again inspired by the Coronation chair. It was topped by a ceramic interpretation of the Sovereign’s Orb, one of the Crown Jewels.
