Calcot girl could walk independently for the first time
Cady Sessions (pictured right with walking frame), who has cerebral palsy, is being considered for the micro-neurosurgery, which will remove the spasticity in her legs, at Bristol’s Frenchay Hospital.
If the six-year-old is selected for the procedure Frenchay Hospital will pay for the £23,000 operation, but her family will have to fund the intensive physiotherapy, with one session costing between £50 and £80.
To help raise money for her aftercare, Cady’s parents, Rachel and Sean, and ten-year-old sister, Jenna, were joined by staff at Tilehurst Surgery Partnership for a sponsored walk along the River Thames from Reading to Whitchurch near Pangbourne on Sunday.
The walk has already raised £2,000 towards Cady’s physiotherapy, with more money still coming in.
Mrs Sessions, who works at Tilehurst Surgery Partnership, said: “The operation has been carried out in America for 20 years but it’s only being carried out in the UK now. It’s a very selective procedure in the UK, but we’re hopeful that Cady will be selected.
“After the surgery, the NHS can only pay for one physio session a week but she’ll need four to five sessions a week to help her walk.”
The family is also organising a family fun day in aid of Cady at The Sun Inn pub in Hill Bottom, Whitchurch.
