Calcot man dies after completing the Reading Half Marathon
The 39-year-old runner collapsed after crossing the finishing line and died later in hospital.
He has been named as Calcot man Ged Clarke, who leaves behind a wife and two children.
Mr Clarke finished the half marathon two hours and 30 minutes, but collapsed after crossing the finishing line at the Madejski Stadium.
Ged’s wife, who asked not to be named, has paid an emotional tribute to her husband this afternoon.
She told NewburyToday: “Ged was a wonderful husband and father to their two children. He will be missed terribly by all his family and friends.
“He will be remembered for his happy and thoughtful character, and his great belief in doing things to the best of his ability, something his family will continue in believing for him.”
Tributes have been paid to the father-of-two on Facebook, especially on the group 12pm Club, a fitness club which he started.
Janine Lewis, also a member of the 12pm Club, said: “Ged was a massive inspiration and motivation for me. We both helped each other in the respect.
“I know him best as the dynamic inspirational Mr 12pmclub as well as the quiet strong private family man.
“His family will seek a great deal of comfort from all the twitters about him, and know he was more than just a good friend for so many.
“I will keep his dream alive, with his friends and family.”
Mr Clarke’s friend, colleague and neighbour, Ian Collard said: “We are devastated by the news.
“No one can believe such a fit person could succumb in this way. He was a very keen amateur athlete and took every opportunity to train and raise money for good causes.
“He will be sorely missed as a friend, neighbour and work colleague.
“Our heartfelt condolences, thoughts and prayers go out to his wife and young children.”
Spokeswoman for Sweatshop, organisers of the Mizuno Reading Half Marathon, Rebecca Richardson said: “We can confirm that a participant collapsed at the finish line of the Mizuno Reading Half Marathon in the Madejski Stadium.
“The male in his late thirties was taken to hospital immediately where they were unable to resuscitate him.
“This is deeply upsetting and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this distressing time. Further information will be released through the official channels in due course”.
