Call for retained firefighters in Pangbourne and Mortimer

The Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service (RBFRS) is currently recruiting retained firefighters at Pangbourne and Mortimer fire stations.
Crew Manager Gary Yorke, from the Retained Support Unit, said: “Retained firefighters are a key part of their own local communities and it is a great way of giving something back.
"It can certainly be a challenging role but it is also incredibly rewarding and fulfilling. You never know what type of incident you might be called out to but, whatever it is, the sense of satisfaction of having helped someone when they need it most is hard to beat.”
Retained firefighters need to be active, practically-minded and enjoy working in a variety of roles. However, as they are not based on a fire station retained firefighters must live or work within six minutes of the fire station.
They receive ongoing training throughout their career and are also paid a basic retainer, plus additional fees for call outs, training and other duties.
On average, they are called out two or three times a week for a couple of hours and if you are not available all the time, you can choose to be on call for only part of the day or week.
The role is open to men and women who must be at least 18-years-old have a good level of all-round fitness and be able to communicate effectively but do not need any paper qualifications.
