Reading Refugee Support Group is calling for volunteers to help support refugees arriving from Afghanistan

Reading Refugee Support Group (RRSG) is appealing for volunteer translators, befrienders and English teachers to help support refugees arriving into Berkshire from Afghanistan.

The RRSG has promised to stand by and support those arriving in the UK and being housed by the Home Office across Berkshire, but mental health support for those living in hotels is not being funded by the government.

As a result, the support group has outlined how the public can continue to help.

It has asked people not to offer clothes, toiletries and food as they have been inundated with donations and don’t have the storage capacity to accept anymore.

The support group has, however, appealed for volunteer translators, befrienders and English teachers to come forward and assists in any way they can.

The RRSG has been supporting refugees and asylum seekers from across the world for more than 26 years, assisting people to register with GPs and schools, find jobs, and help families to settle in the community.

It has also provided English classes, homework clubs, creative activities and mental health support.

If you wish to donate money, which will help in ways such as recruiting support workers and mental health practitioners, the link is rrsg.org.uk/donate
